ECD Schools in poor communities within South Africa are often manned by unqualified teachers similar to child carers. Over 60% of these schools are unregistered and not compliant with the Children’s Act or with Municipal regulations.
It is estimated that nearly 70% of children under 5 years old do not attend school and are therefore unprepared for Primary School. It is also estimated that over 25% of children under 5 yers of age who do attend an ECD are undernourished which impacts upon their performance in class.
It is this environment in which Yomelelani ECD operates.
A rapidly expanding community over the last 25 years has led to a need for further infrastructure and in particular for education.
