Startling Statistics

ECD schools, in poor communities within South Africa, are often manned by unqualified teachers similar to child carers.  Over 60% of these schools are unregistered and not compliant with the Children’s Act or Municipal regulations.

It is estimated that nearly 70% of children under 5 years old do not attend school and are therefore unprepared for Primary School.  It is also estimated that over 25% of children under 5 years of age who do attend an ECD, are undernourished which impacts upon their performance in class.

It is in this type of environment that Yomelelani ECD operates.
